Hot stamped labels are just one of the many types of products we offer customers at Data Graphics. We have been providing custom designed labels, overlays, nameplates, stickers, decals, signs and placards for our customers for more than a quarter of a century. Many of our customers are in the telecommunications, industrial manufacturing, medical equipments, technology, and aerospace and military contracting fields. Our products have had to be long-lasting and durable as the products to which they are affixed. In order to stand up to the harsh working environments some of these products endure on a daily basis, we offer many different materials, finishes, printing processes and adhesives choices so that we can match a labeling product with the particular challenges presented by your order. Hot stamping is one of the printing processes that helps us meet certain challenges.
The process of producing hot stamped labels involves crafting a plate with the image to be printed on the product. This plate can be made of metal (hardened steel, brass, copper or magnesium) or silicone rubber. The choice of a metal plate is one of cost versus durability. Hardened steel plates are exceptionally durable but this added durability comes at a price. This price is well worth it, however, if the order for hot stamped labels is an exceptionally large one where the plate used will be getting a lot of action. Smaller orders of hot stamped labels might use a magnesium plate. Silicone rubber plates come in varying degrees of hardness and offer a little give which comes in very handy when the surface to be printed is not precisely flat. When a plate has been fashioned with the image desired, a metal inking foil is placed between the plate, which is heated, and the surface to be printed. The plate “brands” the surface through the inking foil, leaving a crisp and highly defined image that is capable of standing up to a lot of adverse wear and tear. The example of hot stamping that most people are familiar with is the name brand labeling on wooden pencils.
