An IUID marking is a global asset tag tracking system with which the Department of Defense manages its inventory with a unique DOD ID number. The terms UII number (Unique Item Identifier) and IUID marking (Item Unique Identifier) and DoD ID number are typically used interchangeably. UIDs label items that are delivered to the Department of Defense with a unique identification number. Each IUID marking has machine-readable data that distinguishes it from other items that are similar. To comply with MIL-STD 130 n, each UII number will need to have both constant and incrementing fields.  For example, specific missiles may all be in the same DoD category based on part number, but each individual piece would have its own UII number. The following methodologies of creating a DOD UII number are acceptable:

DOD ID Number Construct 1, composed of Issuing Agency Code, an Enterprise Identifier, and a Serial Number unique within the Enterprise – Standard IUID marking/UID identification label formatting

  • DOD ID Number Construct 2, composed of Issuing Agency Code, an Enterprise Identifier, a Part Number and a Serial Number unique within the Part Number – Standard IUID marking/UID identification label formatting

For the US military, a unique UII number is vital to maintaining proper inventory, maintenance schedules, and minimizing lost and stolen equipment. The DoD unique identification number that is encoded on the IUID marking, is marked with a Data Matrix, commonly called a “UID barcode.” That is not technically correct, as the “UID barcode” is really a Data Matrix code, but the “UID barcode” jargon has remained in common use. In compliance with MIL-STD-130 n, the contents of the “UID barcode” Data Matrix are encoded with the syntax of ISO/IEC 15434 and the semantics of ISO/IEC 15418.

OEM, Aerospace, Telecom, Medical and Defense companies can design and manufacture digital printed overlays for any kind of product often with very fast turnaround times using a digital press. They can be made using your product blue prints or custom die cut shapes. A digital press can shorten the production run making digital printed overlays more affordable. A digital press also eliminates set-up costs. You can have them printed with photos, logos and graphics using the Pantone color matching system.

UID, Barcode & Serialized Plates FAQs

What are UID labels, and what is their purpose?

UID labels (also referred to as barcode labels) are labels that contain a Unique Item Identifier (UID) in the form of a barcode. They serve the purpose of providing a unique identification code for individual items or assets, enabling accurate tracking, inventory management, and traceability.

What information is encoded in UID labels?

UID labels typically encode a unique alphanumeric identifier for each item or asset. This identifier can include information such as a serial number, part number, manufacturer information, or other relevant data required for identification and tracking purposes.

What are the benefits of using UID labels (i.e., barcode labels) for asset management?

UID labels offer several benefits for asset management. They provide a unique identifier for each item, facilitating accurate and efficient tracking throughout its lifecycle. UID labels enable improved inventory management, asset visibility, maintenance tracking, and compliance with government regulations or industry standards.

How are UID labels applied to assets or equipment?

UID labels can be applied to assets or equipment using various methods. Common options include adhesive backing for easy application on smooth surfaces, pre-drilled holes for mechanical attachment, or rivets for secure fastening. The application method depends on the asset type, surface characteristics, and desired level of permanence.

Can UID labels be integrated with existing asset management systems?

Yes, UID labels can be easily integrated with existing asset management systems. The encoded information can be scanned and captured using barcode scanners or mobile devices equipped with barcode scanning capabilities. This allows for seamless integration with inventory databases, tracking systems, or enterprise resource planning (ERP) software for efficient asset management.
