How to Get the Best Labels Printed in a Roll: A Design Guide for Custom Roll Labels, Wholesale ID Stickers, and Asset Tags

There are five important considerations when designing your custom roll label:

Foil Custom Roll Labels on 4x6 Labels Roll

Anniversary Foil Custom Roll Labels on 4×6 Labels Roll

1- What is the purpose of your roll label? There is a big difference between colorful branding/product custom roll labels and internal asset labels. Are you looking for disposable, cheap roll labels for packaging? Or are you looking for durable asset tags designed to last for years? This effects the adhesives and substrate (materials) we use for your custom labels on a roll. Does the roll of labels need to fit a specific labeling machine? If so, size matters. Are there any label requirement we must meet, such as UL 969, PDGQ2, MIL- STD 130-n? We have a great deal of experience manufacturing custom industrial labels to meet these standards and can easily comply with such requests.
2- What information does each roll of labels need to convey? Do you need scannable barcodes/QR codes? Do you need sequentially numbered labels on a roll? Decorative foil labels on a roll? For variable data such as that, hot stamp printing would be the right choice. Digitally printed label sheets or metalphoto ® custom printed metal labels are also good options. Do you need a color roll label printer? If so, flexographic (Flexo) four color custom roll label printing would be the right choice. For full-color printing, digitally printed label sheets is also a good option.
3- What size does the label need to be? For most product identification and/or shipping labels, we recommend starting with a 4×6 labels roll, the size of a large photograph, and scaling up or down depending on the project. For barcode/QR code asset inventory labels we recommend starting with a 1×2 labels roll, and scaling up or down depending on the project. For very small labels where fine detail is necessary, metalphoto custom printed metal labels are the best choice, due to their extremely high resolution.

Polyimide Custom Roll Labels Substrate

Polyimide custom roll labels substrate. This roll of labels material comes in a variety of colors and finishes.

4- Where are the custom industrial labels going to be used? Obviously, the material we must adhere to effects the adhesive we choose to use. This also effects the substrate we choose. If your custom industrial labels are going to be exposed to the elements, a protective laminate coat may be required, or it may be wiser to go with etched, engraved, or custom printed metal labels. We offer specialized printing options to ensure that your custom printed metal labels, a barcoded roll of labels, custom sequentially numbered labels survive every environment– intense cold or heat, saltwater, ultraviolet light exposure, corrosive chemicals, impact or abrasion.
5- What substrate would you prefer for your roll of labels? Custom roll labels can be printed on a wide variety of substrate. You can have a huge variety of substrate, including paper, polyesters (like Mylar), polycarbonates (like Lexan), vinyls, Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP), and polyimide roll of labels. Custom, cheap roll labels may not hold up to the abuse the application requires, in some cases, and etched, engraved, or custom printed metal labels would be better choices. There are many options when picking the best roll label printers for your project. Please feel free to call our helpful team of custom roll label printing experts at 800-639-4316 for a free consultation.

Get the Best Roll of Labels: Custom Design Tips

  • Use Our Custom Roll Label Printing Design Tool
Custom Roll Labels in a Variety of Sizes from a 1x2- 4x6 Labels Roll

Custom Roll Labels in a Variety of Sizes from a 1×2- 4×6 Labels Roll

Our tool makes it easy to scale your design, line up artwork, text, and other components of a custom label, change the colors for your custom roll label printing, etc. Our handy tool ensures that your design looks professional.

  • Design Your Custom Roll Label Printing with Color In Mind
A hot stamping machine is a two color roll label printer. Our Flexo machine is a four color label printer. (Compare that to our competitors. Most of their Flexo machines are only a two or three color roll label printer.) To create photo-quality images and full-color labels, we must use digital printing machines, which prints labels on sheets, rather than custom labels on a roll. Our Flexo technicians can custom match any colors that you desire. Unlike most competitors, we are not limited to the Pantone pallet, so custom colors are fine.
  • The Measurement and Orientation of Your Roll of Labels
For clients using automatic machines to apply their roll of labels, custom measurements and orientation can make a huge difference. Most machines typically have a 3″ core for the roll of labels they dispense. If your machine has a non-standard core or a maximum size (such as a 6 inch exterior diameter) it is wise to notify your custom roll label printers of your specific needs. This will ensure that you get the proper size for your custom roll label printing. What size is optimal for your custom roll labels? A custom 1×2, 2×3 or 4×6 labels roll is very common, and we have pre-existing dies in these sizes (as well as many others). The orientation of the custom labels on a roll can also matter quite a bit. If you want your custom labels on a roll to be oriented face up, face down, right or left for optimal dispensing, be sure to let your custom roll label printers know. This is an easy adjustment for a roll to roll label printer to make, but one that is often overlooked. In fact, roll label printers are sometimes considered a roll to toll label printer because they have the tools to quickly and easily move labels to a new roll and change orientation.
  • Use High Resolution Images for your Custom Roll Label Printing
    Serialized Custom Roll Labels

    Serialized Custom Roll Labels

Only use high resolution images for your custom designed roll of labels. This will ensure that your roll of labels has a clean, professional look. JPEG is preferred.

  • Incorporate Your Logo Into Your Roll of Labels
Regardless of if you are looking for a 4×6 labels roll for shipping and packaging, oversized custom roll labels for product identification, hot stamped foil labels on a roll, sequentially numbered labels on a roll, or barcoded custom industrial labels we recommend featuring your logo prominently. Ideally, your logo would catch the attention of the viewer and stand out from other text or images. We recommend putting it near the top and/or center of your roll of labels for the most impact.
  • Consider a Border on Your Custom Roll Labels
Wholesale labels don’t have to be have borders, but more often than not, clients who don’t incorporate a border into their design wish they had. For smaller designs, such as a 1×2, 2×3, and 4×6 labels roll, this can be especially useful. Depending on your substrate, a simple border can give even cheap roll labels a custom, professional, polished look.
  • Understand Custom Industrial Labels Regulations and Laws
There are a surprising number of rules and regulations regarding custom industrial labels. We are accustomed to meeting a wide variety of UL, military, and government regulations with our custom industrial labels. Feel free to call our team of experienced professionals, and we would be happy to help you navigate these regulations, including UL 969, PGDQ2, MIL-STD 130 n, and ASTM B-209-10. Roll labels custom printers have to follow special FDA regulations for decals placed directly on food (as opposed to food packages), and Data Graphics does not manufacture FDA approved custom labels on a roll.

Roll or Roll Label Printer, Alisa, Setting the Label Orientation

A hot stamp roll to roll label printer creates foil labels on a roll by heat transferring colored foil on to the substrate. You have a wide variety of substrate to choose from in virtually any color and finish, including translucent and transparent materials. Though the stereotypical foil labels on a roll are stamped in metallic golds and silvers, the foil comes in scores of colors and finishes from white to black. We actually have two hot stamp roll label printers – a traditional NewFoil machine and a Zebra roll label printer. For all intents and purposes the only important difference is that the Zebra roll to roll label printer is the only way to create variable data foil labels on a roll. If you want QR/barcodes, or sequentially numbered labels on a roll, the Zebra printer is the choice for you. Typically a hot stamp roll to roll label printer is heated to between 255 and 300 degrees. The temperature and pressure are adjusted by the roll label printer to get a crisp, clean transfer. That makes each roll of labels custom, not just in the design, but also the settings. Fortunately, we have Jen and Alisa, with more than 3 decades of custom roll label printing experience. They are incredibly detail oriented—or as they call themselves, as “sticklers”—and make sure that your roll of labels, custom designed to your exact specifications, meets the highest standards. Our hot stamp 2 color roll label printer is complete with a laminator for an option protective coat on each roll label, and die cutter to cut each roll label to your exact specifications. Fully optimized, we can do about 5000 foil labels on a roll per hour. Cleaning and maintaining a hot stamp multi- color label printer is vital, as they can be a little persnickety. Jen and Alisa take personal pride in the roll label printers, maintaining and cleaning them between every job. Having redundant roll labels printers is also a bonus. This means no delays on your project and even our cheap roll labels on the hot stamp roll label printer look cleaner and crisper than the more expensive options from other custom roll to roll label printers. The end result is the highest quality hot stamped custom roll label printing for your custom project.

Flexo

The Flexo Process of Creating Custom Roll Labels – The Vivid, Four Color Roll Label Printer

Felxo Roll Label Printing Guru, Jen, Prepares to Print a Roll of Labels

Felxo Roll Label Printing Guru, Jen, Prepares to Print a Roll of Labels

Flexo is the most challenging methodology for roll label printers, because for each individual color, roll label printer adjustments of the most delicate type need to be made. Each label and each color has a roll labels custom cylinder fabricated. This cylinder picks up the ink and then transfers the image to the substrate, which is dried before proceeding to the next cylinder. Roll label printers acknowledge that Flexo printing is more art than science. Small adjustments to the alignment of the cylinder allow the roll label printers to adjust registration. To get uniform and consistent coverage for each color, roll label printers adjust the tension, and therefore the amount of ink transferred with each swipe. Since we have a four color roll label printer, that means four sets of precise adjustments for each custom roll label. Fortunately, we have Jen and Alisa, with more than 3 decades of custom roll label printing experience. They are incredibly detail oriented—self-described as “anal retentive”—and make sure that your roll of labels, custom designed to your exact specifications, meets the highest standards. Our Flexo four color roll label printer is complete with a laminator for an option protective coat on each roll label, custom trim carrier to die cut each roll label to your exact specifications, and perforate carrier to perforate or cut the underlayment base to size. We can do custom roll label printing up to 5300 feet long. That seems enormous, but when using the full four color label printer, it takes 70 feet of underlayment just to complete the run through the machine. Obviously, we can do thousands of feet of custom roll label printing per hour, once the tension and registration are correct. Cleaning and maintain a Flexo multi- color label printer is a bit of a nightmare. Jen and Alisa take personal pride in the roll label printers, maintaining and cleaning them between every job. That means no delays on your project and even our cheap roll labels on Flexo look cleaner and crisper than the more expensive options from other custom roll to roll label printers. The end result is the highest quality Flexo custom roll label printing for your custom project.
